Tiafoe/Rune Cincinnati Open

Always difficult backing both players to win a set in a best of three format, hence the plus money odds but that is exactly what I am doing. Regardless of what the odds say I think this will be a closer match than some think, many are thinking that Rune will win this thing in two sets. While that may be true because he is the better player, Tiafoe is no slouch and has showed it the past week.

While digging into this match I saw that Tiafoe has had a pretty decent run in this tournament. Beating Davidovic in two sets, Musetti (silver in the Olympics) in two sets and Lehecka in three sets. The American has had two very good wins in the first two rounds of this tournament, giving me hope that he may actually pull off the upset and make it to his first final.

Rune on the other hand, the man many think is going to win this match has had a bit tighter matches than Tiafoe. Going three sets against Berrettini, three sets against Monfils and a 10 game tie breaker against Borges. Granted he won all of those matches but they were a bit closer than many would have expected.

Is Rune the better player here, yes and the rankings will back up that claim but I think this will go down to the wire because Tiafoe can hang with anyone, we saw him almost beat Alcaraz at Wimbledon. I know that is a grass surface compared to tonights match being played on the hard court but still shows his ability.

Unfortunately these players have never faced off so we don’t have any historical data. As discussed at the beginning I hate taking a bet like this when it is a best of three match but I think both players will bring everything tonight and force a final set to make it to the championship. GL.
